How To Eliminate Stress To Help You Sleep

We live in a world of constant stimulation. Our cellphones are routinely lighting up with notifications, our smartwatches are alerting us to get moving and our computers and TVs are filled with the latest and greatest binge-worthy shows.

It’s no wonder that Americans are more overweight than ever. We end up trying to do everything and be everything to everyone else- rather than focus on our health and wellbeing.

All of this constant stimulation makes it hard to wind down and sleep. I know they tell us to not look at our phones or computers before bed- but that doesn’t really apply to us, right??

With all this stress and stimulation, how can you wind down and get a decent night’s sleep?

Solution: Nature’s Xanax

I’ve got you covered! For the past year, I have been taking a powder called Natural Calm. The Skinny Confidential refers to this as “nature’s Xanax”. And yes- it’s that good!

This magic potion is Natural Calm Magnesium. One mug of this stuff before bed will have you snoozing before you know it! I find that taking Calm helps me turn off my brain. Rather than thinking about my to-do list and the things I forgot to do, my brain quiets down. For me, the feeling is similar to drinking a glass of wine!

Magnesium is also super beneficial for you and helps with more than just getting a good night of sleep!

This source states: “a 2013 study in the Journal of Nutrition found that higher magnesium intake was associated with lower levels of fasting glucose and insulin ( markers related to fat and weight gain ), and one study from England found that a magnesium supplement may have some beneficial effects on reducing fluid retention during the menstrual cycle, meaning you’ll feel less bloated.”

Also, Shape Magazine rates magnesium as one of the top ‘4 bikini body boosters to jumpstart weight loss’ for 2014. (source)

Psychology Today called magnesium “the original chill pill” because of its purported effects on anxiety.

Magnesium Basics

This is going to get a little scientific- but stick with me. According to Natural Vitality, magnesium and calcium are fundamental nutrients that need to be in balance with each other in order for you to fully experience good health.

You experience the tensing (calcium) and relaxing (magnesium) interaction of these two elements every time your heart beats when you feel your pulse and every time you breathe.

When we are under stress, our cells go through a change. Calcium, normally outside the cells, enters the cells and the calcium level becomes high. This is the action state in which a muscle cell, for example, will contract and tense the muscle. The magnesium then pushes the calcium out of the cell and the cell is again in its resting, relaxed state.

Think of it as an on-off switch. The “off” is magnesium and the “on” is calcium. But what happens to a cell that is not in balance—where the magnesium level in the body is deficient?

In simple terms, the “off” switch doesn’t fully turn off. That means calcium can continuously leak into the cells and stimulate cell activity (the “on” switch). The result is stress accompanied by one or more of the magnesium deficiency symptoms. (source)

More Magnesium benefits:

  • Lowers cortisol
  • Required for producing and storing energy
  • May boost exercise performance
  • Fights depression. Magnesium plays a critical role in brain function and mood, and low levels are linked to an increased risk of depression
  • Has benefits against Type 2 Diabetes
  • Can lower blood pressure
  • Has anti-inflammatory benefits
  • Can prevent migraines
  • It reduces insulin resistance
  • Improves PMS symptoms
  • Important for bone health
  • Relieves anxiety
  • Can help with digestion

Do you need magnesium?

According to Natural Vitality, Most people don’t get enough magnesium, including many who already take magnesium. In fact, 66 percent of Americans are magnesium deficient. There are two reasons for this: the amount of magnesium required by the body is greater than people think and many magnesium capsules and tablets are not completely absorbed by the body. Magnesium deficiency can be caused by a number of stresses on the body, including—but not limited to—lack of adequate dietary magnesium, emotional stress, some drugs (diuretics, antibiotics, oral contraceptives, insulin, cortisone), heavy exercise, diabetes, gastrointestinal disorders and too much calcium in the diet. How does Natural Calm Magnesium help sleep?

So how does it actually work? Magnesium actually regulates melatonin. Melatonin can be taken as a supplement and studies have found that magnesium helps to regulate melatonin levels, thus positively influencing sleep cycles. Magnesium and melatonin are closely related and low levels of either can lead to sleep dysfunctions. (source)

Is Natural Calm healthy?

Everyone defines “healthy” differently. In my book, Natural Calm is very healthy! There are 0.015 grams of stevia per teaspoon of flavored Natural Calm. There no added sweeteners or flavors to the unflavored version of Natural Calm. Additionally, there are no calories or carbs in any of the Natural Calm powders!

What flavor?

I love the Raspberry Lemon flavor! That is the only one I have tried because I really enjoy it!

When to take Natural Calm Magnesium?

I personally take Calm at night. Some people like to take it two times a day or during moments of high stress. You can take it whenever you would like! According to their website, “Consistent intake of Natural Vitality CALM on a daily or regular basis is the best way to experience the benefits and achieve an optimum magnesium intake.” (source)

How to Consume Natural Calm Magnesium?

Per the directions on the bottle, mix powder in a glass or mug with 2–3 oz of hot water. Let it fizz, then stir until dissolved. Fill with warm or cold water and enjoy. You can also add Natural Calm to a glass or bottle of cold water.

I really enjoy a warm mug of Natural Calm at night! If you would rather mix your Natural Calm with something else, first activate the product in 2-3 ounces of water. Once the fizzing has stopped, you can add the mix to juice, smoothie, tea or whatever you desire!

When mixing the powder with cold drinks/water, it takes longer to activate and dissolve. But once it does dissolve, it is just the same as mixing it with warm water.
