What is Twitch? How can you support your favorite Twitch streamer? Learn everything you need to know here!
What Is Twitch?
Twitch is a live streaming platform for video games and other live broadcasts. People stream video games, workouts, and even creative mediums like painting and cooking.
How Can You Support Your Favorite Streamers?
There are both free and monetary ways that you can support your favorite streamer- or any streamer you want. Here are a few free ways that you can make a difference.
Free Ways To Support Your Favorite Twitch Streamer
1. Follow them on Twitch
Following someone on Twitch is similar to following someone on Instagram or any other social media platform. You will need to create a Twitch account. Then, you can search for streamers via their Twitch username or in specific game categories. Once you find the streamer that you want to follow, below the video on their Twitch channel, you will see a “follow’”. Click “follow”. If you want to receive an email notification when the streamer goes live, check the box when this question appears.

2. Subscribe to their channel via Amazon Prime
If you have Amazon Prime, you can subscribe to your favorite streamer for FREE. This is one of your Prime benefits. To subscribe to a Twitch channel using Amazon Prime, follow the steps below.
- Make sure you’re logged in to both your Amazon and Twitch accounts and open a tab for both of them in the same web browser.
- Click the Connect your Twitch account link on this page.
- Follow the instructions and click the purple Confirm button. Your accounts should now be connected.
- Open a web browser on a computer and navigate to the Twitch channel you wish to subscribe to.
- In the top-right corner of the screen, or below the video to the right, there is a purple Subscribe button. Click it.
- Once clicked, a small box containing a variety of subscription options should appear.
- Click the Subscribe Free button to begin your free Twitch subscription for this channel.
Please note: Unlike paid Twitch subscriptions, the free one does not renew automatically each month. Free subscriptions must be renewed manually.
How to Renew Your Free Twitch Subscription
Because the free Twitch subscriptions don’t renew automatically on their own, you will need to visit the streamer’s channel in a web browser again and manually re-subscribe every 30 days. The process is the same as when you sub to a channel for the first time. Your subscription streak will continue as long as the subscription to the same account is renewed within 30 days of its expiration.
How Is Subscribing Different Than Following?
Subscribing and following on Twitch are NOT the same thing.
Following a channel on Twitch will add it to your follow list and display it on the front page of the Twitch website and apps when it’s live. It’s similar to following accounts on Instagram and is totally free.
Subscribing, on the other hand, is a way to support a Twitch channel financially by opting-in to regular monthly donations.
3. Tune in to live streams
Have some downtime? Tune into your favorite streamer’s live stream! Having community interaction while streaming is motivating and shows your favorite streamers that you care.
Viewers help streamers reach certain goals, such as affiliate or partner. If you are on your computer and can leave a tab open to lurk for a streamer, that can help! If you choose to do this, be sure you mute the TAB of your browser, not the video, otherwise the lurk will not count.
4. Follow your favorite streamer on social media channels and help share content!
Follow and share with your friends! Super simple and helps your favorite streamer reach more people and grow their community.
How to support your favorite streamer with donations
1. Subscribe- starting at just $4.99/month
For less than a cup of coffee at Starbucks, you can support your favorite streamer! A Twitch subscription is a recurring payment made to individual channels. The purpose of subscribing, often called subbing, is to assist streamers financially so that they can continue to produce great content and transition to streaming on Twitch full-time. The benefits aren’t just for the streamer though! Subscribers are rewarded for their support with an increased status in that channel’s chat room in the form of new emotes and other digital goods.
An important thing to note- Twitch Partners and Affiliates receive 50 percent of the total subscription fee, so for the $4.99 tier, the streamer would get around $2.50.
To subscribe to a Twitch channel follow the same steps as above, but choose the pricing tier you would like to subscribe to.
2. Donate via Twitch
If you would prefer to not pay a month subscription fee, you can also donate monetarily via Twitch. 100% of donations go directly to supporting your favorite streamer!
3. Gift bits
You can also donate Bits! Bits are a way to cheer on your favorite streamer using characters that are similar to emojis on Twitch. The standard share for Partners and Affiliates is 1 cent per Bit used to Cheer for them.
